A team of researchers from Japan has introduced an innovative humanoid robot designed to dispense wisdom grounded in Buddhist teachings. The project, led by Professor Kumagai Seiji from Kyoto University’s Institute for the Future of Human Society, has resulted in a robot that stands approximately 1.3 meters tall and utilizes advanced artificial intelligence trained specifically on Buddhist scriptures.
During a demonstration for NHK, the robot was asked to provide guidance on excessive worry and overthinking. In response, it highlighted a fundamental Buddhist principle: the importance of not succumbing to one’s thoughts without discernment. The robot suggested that a feasible approach is to work on letting go of these thoughts, a practice that resonates with mindfulness principles in Buddhism.
The robot’s design features a humanoid form, allowing it to engage in more meaningful and interactive conversations. Notably, the robot displayed a gesture of prayer by pressing its palms together, adding a level of spiritual authenticity to its responses. In addition to its conversational abilities, the robot is capable of walking, enhancing its presence and interaction.
Professor Kumagai, who is also a Buddhist priest, expressed his desire to continue enhancing the robot’s capabilities while also engaging in discussions about the ethical implications of using technology in this manner. This blend of tradition and innovation raises interesting questions about the role of artificial intelligence in spiritual and mental wellness, potentially paving the way for further integration of technology in personal development and mindfulness practices.
