Squanch Games CEO Mike Fridley announced that the upcoming sequel, High on Life 2, will launch on both Xbox and PlayStation simultaneously, marking a significant shift from the first game’s exclusive deal with Xbox. This decision was influenced by the sales performance of the original title, prompting Fridley to declare the PlayStation version as the studio’s leading platform despite the initial exclusivity.

In an interview with TechRadar Gaming, Fridley explained that the move to release High on Life 2 on all platforms at the same time was a straightforward business choice, driven by the need to reach a broader audience. The first High on Life game debuted in December 2022 as an Xbox Series X and S, Xbox One, and PC exclusive, only arriving on PlayStation 4 and 5 in July 2023. The new installment, launching on February 13, will be available for PS5, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and PC, with a Nintendo Switch 2 version expected on April 20.

Fridley noted that leveraging Xbox Game Pass was a key factor in their strategy, despite some uncertainties about potential sales impacts. He acknowledged the platform’s role in broadening exposure, emphasizing that getting more players to experience the game was vital for establishing the franchise. He stated, “If your game’s good, getting it on Game Pass is great.”

Although the first game’s success came under an Xbox deal, Fridley assured that the PlayStation version of High on Life 2 is now prioritized, attributing this shift to the ongoing demand from PlayStation users. He highlighted that players on PlayStation are likely to prefer purchasing the game directly rather than accessing it via Game Pass.

Further, Fridley shared insights into marketing strategies, explaining that launching on multiple platforms simultaneously reduces marketing costs and simplifies promotional efforts. He remarked, “It was kind of an easy business decision, as far as just looking at sales numbers on the first one,” indicating that the strategy is aimed at maximizing audience reach.

As the gaming community eagerly anticipates the release of High on Life 2, Fridley’s comments reflect a forward-thinking approach in the industry, where accessibility and audience engagement are becoming increasingly crucial. The strategic release plan appears promising for broadening the franchise’s appeal and welcoming a new wave of players.
