LIVIGNO, Italy — Alessandro Barbieri has set the stage for what promises to be an exciting Olympic journey after finishing fourth in the men’s halfpipe qualifier on February 11 at Livigno Snow Park. The 17-year-old American, hailing from Portland, Oregon, scored an 88.50 in his third run, making him the highest finisher among the three Americans who advanced to the 12-man final scheduled for February 13.
Despite falling short of the podium—finishing behind Australia’s Scotty James (94), Japan’s Yuto Totuska (91.25), and Ryusei Yamada (90.25)—Barbieri’s performance was a notable Olympic debut. He expressed confidence in his abilities, indicating that he believes there is even more to come. “What I really have in my head is a 10. That was more like a six,” Barbieri stated. “I have a lot more in the tank… I kind of expect myself to be near the top after all this hard work I’ve put. I’m pleased, but not too shocked.”
Barbieri’s journey to this point has been underscored by support from snowboarding legend Shaun White, who has identified him as a key contender to watch. “We need another guy like Shaun,” Barbieri remarked, acknowledging the strong field of American snowboarders while emphasizing the need for Team USA to reclaim its presence on the podium.
Joining Barbieri in the finals are American teammates Chase Josey and Jake Pates, who placed 11th and 12th, respectively. Josey, 30, showcased a solid initial run with a score of 76.50, though he struggled in his second attempt. He noted, “Those are the little things that the judges look for… I’m fighting for this opportunity to be in the finals, but it’s nice to see that run get rewarded.” Meanwhile, 27-year-old Pates, who faced an early fall, rose to the occasion with a critical score of 75.50, managing to secure his place just above the cut line.
A fourth American competitor, Chase Blackwell, finished in 15th place with a score of 69. Despite this, the overall performance of the American contingent offers hope for Team USA as they approach the final rounds, with young talents like Barbieri leading the charge into the competition.
