Hawaii’s Mauna Kea Sees First Snowfall as US Winter Pattern Shifts

MAUNA KEA SUMMIT, Hawaii – The Big Island of Hawaii has welcomed its first snowfall of the year, marking a seasonal milestone for the tropical state. Fresh snow has accumulated on the summit of Mauna Kea, the highest peak in Hawaii, which towers at 13,803 feet above sea level. According to the FOX Weather Center, snow accumulations at the summit could reach up to four inches, with ongoing forecasts predicting continued moderate to heavy snow through Thursday morning.

While Mauna Kea is accustomed to snow, this fresh covering stands out, especially given that in October 2024 the area recorded approximately three inches of snow. Hawaii’s snow report comes as other regions across the U.S. are yet to see significant snowfall. For instance, Denver typically experiences its first snowfall by mid-September, but this year, the Mile High City has not recorded any snow thus far, falling behind its usual average of nearly five inches by this time.

New York City has also only received traces of snow, with flurries observed but no noteworthy accumulation. By now, the Big Apple usually expects its first significant snowfall around December 8, but this year’s totals are below average with less than an inch of snow.

Similarly, Minneapolis and Green Bay have faced a slow start to winter. Minneapolis, which typically sees its first snow by November 4, has received only slight traces, while Green Bay, expecting to see its first snowfall around November 12, has yet to accumulate any snow.

Utah’s Salt Lake City is in a similar boat, usually seeing about four inches by early November but has been dealing with a snow drought, having recorded no snowfall this season.

This anomaly in snowfall patterns across the U.S. highlights the unique weather conditions affecting different regions and brings a hint of winter wonder to Hawaii, traditionally known for its warm climate. As the season progresses, there are hopes for more snow in various parts of the country, creating excitement for winter enthusiasts everywhere.
