The National Council for Persons with Disabilities in the Northern Division is gearing up for the festive season by showcasing a range of handmade crafts ideal for various events and home decoration. Monisha Rao, the Clerical Officer North, highlighted that these crafts are created by students with diverse abilities, providing them with a valuable opportunity to earn income that promotes their long-term independence and well-being.
Rao stressed the need to transform societal perceptions of disability, urging the public to focus on abilities rather than limitations. “Our young adults with disabilities at the center are producing items like garments, pillows, and cushion covers, which not only offer them essential skills for income generation but also help them build confidence,” she explained. The center is set to have a booth at the upcoming International Disability Day to showcase their crafts, with hopes of expanding their market reach and generating further income for these talented individuals.
Supporting this initiative, Reshma Prasad, a teacher connected with the program, emphasized that real opportunities are key to achieving success and independence. She pointed out the importance of appreciating each individual’s abilities while fostering personal and professional growth. “Every child deserves equal access to resources,” Prasad affirmed. Although the stigma surrounding disabilities has mitigated, she identified a continuing need for heightened awareness and accessibility to promote inclusive practices.
