The Pacific Islands News Association (PINA) is proud to participate in the global celebration of International Women’s Day 2026, highlighting the significant impact of women media workers throughout the Pacific. This year’s theme, “Give to Gain,” emphasizes that providing women with respect, equal opportunity, and protection ultimately leads to enhanced journalism and stronger media organizations.

Women journalists in the Pacific are crucial in telling stories that truly matter. Although representation has seen improvements in recent years, countless women in the media still encounter significant challenges. Over half of these journalists report experiencing workplace abuse or harassment, including online attacks and sexual harassment. Additionally, issues such as unequal pay, restricted access to assignments in areas like sports or political reporting persist, despite their qualifications and capabilities.

Yet, in the face of these obstacles, women journalists relentlessly lead critical coverage, particularly concerning gender-based violence and community-related issues. PINA recognizes the efforts made by Pacific-led initiatives, such as Women in Media Fiji and networks in Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, and Tonga, which strive to establish safe environments, mentorship, and professional support for female media professionals.

Since 2022, promoting women in media has been a significant focus for PINA, discussed at various Pacific Media Summits, including in the Solomon Islands and Niue in 2024. This vital topic is set to remain in the spotlight at the upcoming 8th Pacific Media Summit in Savusavu, Fiji, in September 2026.

PINA President Kalafi Moala reiterated the essential role of women in media for the future of journalism in the Pacific. He stated, “When we give women equal space, respect, and protection in our newsrooms, we gain stronger storytelling, stronger institutions, and stronger communities. Supporting women in media is not optional — it is essential for the future of our region.”

As International Women’s Day unfolds, PINA urges media employers and male colleagues across the Pacific to treat women with the respect and fairness they deserve and to foster safe and supportive workplaces for all journalists. Empowering women in media translates to collective advancement for the entire Pacific region.

PINA extends heartfelt wishes for a joyful International Women’s Day to all women media workers throughout the Pacific.
