Residents of Lekanai Village in Gau are making impressive strides in improving their livelihoods and fostering community development through the establishment of two new cooperatives. The Miramira ni Savura Lele Women’s Cooperative, formed by 24 women, has expanded its income-generating activities beyond mat weaving to include layer chicken farming, significantly supported by government aid.
Chairperson Tirisa Maibau shared the cooperative’s ambitious plans to increase their poultry flock to 200 birds, with the goal of becoming the primary supplier of eggs on Gau Island. This initiative not only aims for economic sustainability but also focuses on empowering women within the community.
Simultaneously, the men of Lekanai have initiated the Vatuvula Cooperative, centered on launching a local shop that will improve residents’ access to essential goods. Together, both cooperatives symbolize a unified effort to create economic opportunities and drive development in the village.
