For many years, families in Lamiti and Malawai on Gau Island have faced daily challenges as their children venture into small boats to reach school, a journey fraught with dangers posed by changing tides and unpredictable weather. However, a sense of relief has emerged for these families, as the Lamiti Malawai Primary School was recently presented with a new fibreglass boat and a 40HP engine, valued at $24,000, during an official handover by Education Minister Aseri Radrodro.
This boat not only represents new transportation equipment but also signifies greater safety and dignity for the students, reinforcing the belief that their education is valuable. Teachers have noted the adverse impact of bad weather on school attendance, with students often missing days of class due to unsafe travel conditions. Many parents have been forced to pool resources or borrow boats to ensure their children could reach school safely, highlighting the critical need for reliable transportation.
With the introduction of this new vessel, the community anticipates a significant improvement in consistent school attendance, eliminating some of the anxiety parents have felt regarding their children’s journeys. Alongside the boat, the Ministry of Education has also provided new library books and hygiene equipment, crucial for enhancing the learning environment, especially in a resource-strapped setting.
Minister Radrodro acknowledged the dedication of teachers and staff who travel long distances to support students in remote communities, emphasizing the government’s commitment to understanding and addressing the challenges faced by schools in rural areas. He reiterated that every child, regardless of where they live, deserves access to quality education and safe transportation.
