Veteran catcher Gary Sánchez is set to join the Milwaukee Brewers after agreeing to a one-year contract worth $1.75 million, according to a source familiar with the situation. The deal, which has not yet been officially announced, was first reported by the New York Post.
The 33-year-old Sánchez returns to the Brewers after having played for them during the 2024 season, where he recorded a batting average of .220, a .307 on-base percentage, 11 home runs, and 37 RBIs in 89 games. He supported two-time All-Star catcher William Contreras while also taking on some duties as a designated hitter.
Previously, Sánchez spent the past season with the Baltimore Orioles, hitting .231 with a .297 on-base percentage, five home runs, and 24 RBIs in just 29 games. Over his career, he boasts a batting average of .224 and has accumulated 189 home runs and 509 RBIs across 859 games played with the New York Yankees, Minnesota Twins, New York Mets, San Diego Padres, Brewers, and Orioles.
Sánchez is well-regarded in the league, having finished second in the American League Rookie of the Year voting in 2016 and earning All-Star selections in 2017 and 2019 with the Yankees.
Before Sánchez’s signing, the Brewers had only two catchers on their 40-man roster: Contreras and young prospect Jeferson Quero, who has yet to make his major league debut. Additionally, the team recently signed catcher Reese McGuire to a minor league contract, who is expected to compete for a spot in training camp after a season with the Chicago Cubs.
This signing comes as the Brewers look to bolster their depth at the catcher position, ensuring they have experienced players in the lineup as they gear up for the upcoming season.
