Former WWE star Gable Steveson recently shared insights into his decision to leave professional wrestling, shedding light on the reasons that influenced his departure from the organization.
Steveson joined WWE in September 2021, entering as a highly anticipated talent following his success as an Olympic gold medalist in Tokyo. He was notably the second Olympic champion to sign with WWE, alongside the celebrated Kurt Angle. However, despite the excitement surrounding his arrival, Steveson’s wrestling career did not unfold as many had hoped.
In a candid conversation on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast, Steveson discussed the struggles he faced while trying to balance the demands of professional wrestling and his passion for amateur wrestling. He emphasized that he felt he could not maintain his competitive edge while divided between two intense disciplines. “I had a great experience. I have nothing wrong with anybody there,” Steveson remarked, highlighting his positive relationships with WWE leaders, including Triple H, Stephanie McMahon, and Vince McMahon. However, he realized that his drive to excel required him to commit fully to one path or the other. “If I’m not going to give 100% to the business, then you might as well let me out,” he stated.
Steveson’s journey with WWE began under a NIL (Next In Line) marketing deal, following his Olympic victory. He was drafted to the RAW brand and made a notable appearance at WrestleMania 38 in April 2022. Unfortunately, his only significant match, held in August 2023 at the NXT Great American Bash against Baron Corbin, ended in a double countout and faced criticism from fans. This led to his removal from the roster in September 2023 and eventual release in May 2024.
Since leaving WWE, Steveson has returned to college wrestling at the University of Minnesota, where he has thrived. In 2025, he made history by becoming the first heavyweight wrestler in Big Ten Conference to win four conference championships, defeating Penn State’s Greg Kerkvliet in the final. Additionally, he became the first wrestler in University of Minnesota history to earn five All-American honors.
Beyond his athletic achievements, Steveson is embracing a new chapter in his personal life, having welcomed a baby girl with his girlfriend, Maddie Mitchell. His journey illustrates the importance of following one’s passion and the potential for success in multiple arenas, even after stepping away from the limelight of professional wrestling.
