Typhoon Fung-wong has caused significant destruction across northern regions of the Philippines, claiming at least two lives and leaving many towns isolated due to severe weather conditions. As residents began to survey the damage on Monday, the reality of the storm’s impact became clearer.
The typhoon struck late Sunday night in Dinalungan, Aurora province, prompting the evacuation of over one million people ahead of its landfall. With powerful winds, heavy rains, and dangerous storm swells, the effects of the typhoon were particularly severe on the island of Luzon. Reports indicate extensive damage in locations such as Santiago City in Isabela province, where uprooted trees and downed power lines were widespread.
Residents shared harrowing experiences from the storm. Romeo Mariano recalled a sleepless night as the winds battered his home, causing metal sheets to rattle and tree branches to crash down. With morning light, the aftermath showed their yard strewn with debris from the storm.
The Civil Defence office confirmed the death toll at two, with two additional injuries reported. Patrick Alexis Angara, the vice-governor of Aurora province, highlighted the challenges posed by landslides and damaged roads that made at least three towns unreachable. “Assessment and clearing operations are underway,” Angara informed local media, emphasizing efforts to mobilize resources for recovery.
Typhoon Fung-wong has now moved over the South China Sea and is expected to head northeast toward Taiwan. However, ongoing threats of heavy rain and strong winds persist, particularly for coastal areas. In light of the storm, over 400 flights have been canceled as civil aviation authorities maintain a state of alert.
