Social welfare recipients are being offered crucial support in their quest for self-sufficiency through a series of innovative income-generating projects. This initiative, led by the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Protection, aims to equip individuals with important tools and resources needed to establish small businesses, thereby fostering economic independence.

Minister Sashi Kiran highlighted that the initiative seeks to minimize long-term reliance on social welfare by promoting accountability, effective business planning, and sustainability in entrepreneurial ventures. This proactive approach is intended to empower individuals and stimulate their economic independence.

Recently, ten beneficiaries from the Central Division, including residents from Nausori, Korovou, Suva, Navua, and Rewa, received their business support at a handover event. Acting Commissioner Central Mateo Naiveli and staff from the Social Welfare Nausori Office were present to commemorate the occasion. This assistance comes after the recipients completed the Ministry’s “Start Your Business” training program, which was organized in partnership with the Ministry of Commerce and Business Development.

During the training, participants developed comprehensive business plans and selected projects that aligned with their skills and the demands of their local markets. The projects range from canteens, kava businesses, market vending, jewelry making, fish selling, to BBQ enterprises.

To further support these budding entrepreneurs, the Ministry provided essential equipment and initial stock to facilitate the launch of their businesses. Minister Kiran emphasized the program’s potential to create significant opportunities for social welfare recipients, encouraging them to take part in productive economic activities and improve their financial circumstances.

This initiative marks an important step toward promoting self-reliance and enhancing the livelihoods of those involved, ultimately contributing to the economic vibrancy of their communities. By empowering individuals through entrepreneurship, the program not only aims to reduce dependency on social welfare but also fosters a spirit of innovation and resilience within the community.
