From Hurdles to Scrubs: Fiji Nursing Graduate Finds Purpose in Mental Health

Emosi Naitoko celebrated a significant milestone yesterday as he graduated with a Bachelor of Nursing from the University of Fiji, marking the culmination of four years of diligence and hard work. The 22-year-old from Kabariki, Kadavu, who has maternal roots in Vuna, Taveuni, was among 308 graduates who received their certificates during the graduation event held at the Saweni campus in Lautoka.

Reflecting on his academic journey, Mr. Naitoko described how each year of his course included internships, with a particularly impactful experience at St. Giles Hospital in Suva that intensified his interest in mental health care. “It really showed a lot about the struggles that people face, the unseen or hidden struggles that people go through mentally,” he shared. “You may look well on the outside, but you don’t know what’s going on inside their mental well-being.”

Despite the challenges he faced, including financial difficulties in his first year as a private student and the need to overcome various personal hurdles to meet his fee obligations, Mr. Naitoko remained determined. He highlighted the importance of a supportive environment, both academically and socially, advising fellow students to be mindful of their peer groups. “Do not give in to peer pressure and be determined about what you want to achieve in life,” he emphasized.

Looking ahead, Mr. Naitoko aims to secure a job in the nursing field before considering further advancements in his qualifications. His journey not only illustrates the rewards of perseverance and dedication but also serves as an inspiration for young individuals pursuing their educational aspirations.
