WAISIKI Naqiolevu, a 31-year-old from Soso, Kadavu, has returned to Fiji after an enriching two-year academic experience in India, where he completed a Master of Arts in English Literature at the esteemed Delhi University, supported by an Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) scholarship.

Reflecting on his journey, Mr. Naqiolevu expressed his honor in representing Fiji in a country he now regards as a second home. He noted the initial overwhelming nature of his arrival in India, with its vibrant culture, language, and diverse cuisine. “I came as a student, but India made me feel like I came home. India taught me that diversity is not a weakness, but a strength,” he said.

Throughout his studies at Delhi University, Mr. Naqiolevu’s education was enriched not only by literature but also by the cultural tapestry of India. He remarked, “My professors did not only teach me literature, but they taught me Ambika, they taught me Vande Mataram, they taught me all sorts of beliefs that existed in a society. They believed in me even when I doubted myself.”

His time in India was filled with cultural exploration, from celebrating Diwali and Holi to savoring street food and chai throughout the day. However, he faced difficulties adjusting, particularly in the early days when the local customs and language felt foreign. Mr. Naqiolevu credits his faith as a cornerstone of support during that challenging transition, stating, “To be in a place where they don’t speak my language, they don’t eat my food, they don’t worship the same God as I do — I think God became the closest more than anybody else out there. Prayer was my coping mechanism.”

Now back in Fiji, Mr. Naqiolevu has set his sights on encouraging other iTaukei and Fijians to seek similar educational opportunities. “If I can do it, they also can do it. There’s always hope,” he affirmed. He learned about the ICCR scholarship through a lecturer friend while studying at the Fiji National University and advocates for such opportunities that can elevate lives and contribute positively to society.

With his newfound knowledge and experiences, Mr. Naqiolevu is eager to enter the academic field, aiming to inspire others and share the lessons of unity and resilience he gained during his time in India. His journey serves as a beacon of hope, demonstrating that with determination and support, success is attainable.
