Fritz Edges Musetti in Turin to Open ATP Finals

Taylor Fritz delivered a striking performance to halt Lorenzo Musetti’s debut at the Nitto ATP Finals on Monday, clinching a convincing 6-3, 6-4 victory that left the Italian crowd at the Inalpi Arena in Turin disappointed. Fritz’s blend of disciplined aggression allowed him to control the match, consistently pushing Musetti back from the baseline.

Fritz, who reached the finals in Turin last year and the semi-finals in his debut the year prior, had the advantage of a week’s preparation in Italy. In contrast, Musetti arrived less than 24 hours before the match after competing in the Athens final against Novak Djokovic. This difference in preparation was evident, with Fritz showcasing a comfort level in the indoor setting that allowed him to dictate play.

The American, seeded sixth, utilized his powerful groundstrokes effectively, consistently keeping Musetti on the defensive. Although the 23-year-old Italian displayed moments of brilliance, he struggled to establish control against Fritz’s penetrating shots. “I am really happy. I thought I did a lot of things really well,” Fritz remarked after the match, highlighting his ability to handle pressure on serve and capitalize on key opportunities.

Fritz’s performance rating of 9.20 significantly surpassed his tour average of 8.28 for the 2025 season. After securing a critical break in the second set, he maintained his composure despite a brief scare while serving for the match at 5-4. Ultimately, he emerged victorious after one hour and 43 minutes of play.

Expressing his affinity for the conditions in Turin, Fritz acknowledged the motivation he draws from the ATP Finals, saying, “Every time I come here, I like the conditions and it is very easy to get motivated.” With this win, Fritz now holds a record of 1-0 in the Jimmy Connors group and will be looking to maintain his momentum as he faces Carlos Alcaraz and Alex de Minaur in the upcoming round-robin matches.

Fritz’s season has been impressive, boasting a 52-21 record and securing titles in both Eastbourne and Stuttgart. The matchup with Musetti marked their first encounter in 2025, and Fritz now stands 3-3 in their head-to-head series.

Musetti, despite the loss, has experienced a breakout season, earning his spot at the year-end event for the first time. He reached tour-level finals in Monte-Carlo, Chengdu, and Athens, marking a significant achievement in his young career. Alongside Musetti in Turin is fellow Italian Jannik Sinner, the defending champion, who is set to compete against Felix Auger-Aliassime later on Monday.
