The Italian-Filipino athlete, who spent much of his childhood 10,000 kilometers away from the Philippines in Tuscany, has embraced a full-circle moment as he prepares to represent the country of his birth at the Olympic Games.
Ceccarelli’s love for skiing ignited shortly after he arrived in Italy, thanks in part to his adoptive mother, Lisa Seghi, a former professional skier, who played a pivotal role in his athletic development. She not only honed his skills but also passionately encouraged him to pursue his heritage, leading him on a three-year quest to obtain Filipino citizenship, which he achieved in May 2023.
Reflecting on this achievement, Ceccarelli expressed, “My mum was very happy, we both were. She taught me everything that I know about the art of skiing. Family is very important, especially when you are alone and don’t have a family.” He feels a profound sense of pride representing the Philippines, recognizing it as more than just a sporting opportunity—it’s a way to honor his origins and connect with his birth country.
The support he has received from the Philippine Olympic Committee has enhanced this experience, allowing him the chance to compete on an international stage. While he cherishes his Italian identity and acknowledges the high competition levels in Italy, he appreciates how the Philippines offers him a sense of importance and belonging. “Competing for Italy is, unfortunately, difficult because in Italy the level is very high and we know that there are many athletes,” he explained. “The Philippines really makes you feel important. I can tell you that I am free and happy.”
Ceccarelli’s desire to explore the Philippines is palpable, as he mentions his wish to visit even before the COVID-19 pandemic. He has already been exposed to the beauty of the country despite not yet visiting its stunning coastlines, indicating a hopeful outlook for his future travels.
