The Fiji National University (FNU) Council has taken the significant step of escalating complaints against Vice-Chancellor Unaisi Nabobo-Baba to law enforcement agencies, including the police and the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). This decision arises from an unaddressed request for a meeting with Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, a point highlighted by Council chairman Semesa Karavaki.

Karavaki indicated that this initiative follows a recent council meeting where comprehensive files detailing the allegations were prepared for submission. He underscored two specific allegations against Mrs. Baba that he believes require investigation by the relevant authorities. “The council stands with the law. I mean, we should be a nation of law-abiding people,” Karavaki stated, stressing the necessity of addressing the concerns over alleged mismanagement within the university.

The council is determined to uphold the integrity of FNU through these actions. Karavaki expressed intentions to update the Prime Minister upon his return from New Zealand, mentioning the lack of response to inquiries previously directed at Rabuka.

In a noteworthy development, just last week, Prime Minister Rabuka transferred the management of FNU from the Ministry of Education to the Office of the Prime Minister, a move Karavaki described as a takeover of the university’s governance. The council is advocating for an independent investigation into the university’s operations, citing a history of numerous complaints that have been received over time.

This escalation reflects the council’s commitment to transparency and accountability, indicating a proactive approach to restore trust within the institution. The results of these upcoming investigations and inquiries are poised to significantly influence the governance landscape of the Fiji National University, fostering an environment where integrity and accountability are paramount.
