Flying Fijians Set for Historic 2026 Nations Championship

After widespread anticipation, the Fiji Rugby Union has officially confirmed that the Flying Fijians will take part in the inaugural Nations Championship, set to commence in July 2026. This announcement was made by Fiji Rugby director Leilani Burnes, who highlighted the significance of this development for Fiji’s rugby journey.

Burnes stated, “Fiji will take its rightful place as a permanent, structured competition alongside some of the very best teams in the world. Fiji is now a Tier One nation, recognised and included amongst the global elite. This is one of the most significant achievements in Fiji’s rugby journey.” The inclusion of Fiji, alongside Japan, marks an exciting opportunity to compete against renowned teams from both the Southern and Northern Hemispheres.

In the Nations Championship, Fiji will face formidable opponents including New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, Argentina, England, France, Ireland, Italy, Scotland, and Wales. The competition will feature 12 of the world’s strongest rugby nations, with each team scheduled to play six matches across hemispheres. Northern hemisphere teams will visit the southern hemisphere in July 2026, while southern teams will tour the north in November. The finals weekend is planned to take place in London, making it a major event in the international rugby calendar.

The importance of this participation cannot be overstated. The Flying Fijians, who recently achieved seven wins out of ten Test matches, are looking to build on their momentum against elite teams. Head coach Mick Byrne has emphasized the need for increased exposure to top-tier competition, which is essential for narrowing the performance gap with higher-ranked nations.

The anticipated participation in the Nations Championship aligns with Fiji’s ambitions for growth and development within the sport. With their current world ranking positioned at ninth, this opportunity will not only elevate Fiji Rugby’s profile but also inspire the next generation of rugby players in the region. The stage is set for the Flying Fijians to showcase their talent, determination, and the rich rugby culture that Fiji embodies.

As Fiji prepares for this new challenge, fans are hopeful for a bright future that promises excitement and progress in the world of rugby. The future looks promising for the Flying Fijians, and the nation stands proud as they embark on this monumental journey in international rugby.
