Florida State’s football program finds itself in a challenging position as the Seminoles, once a beacon of success, are now on the brink of bowl ineligibility for the second year in a row under head coach Mike Norvell. Two years ago, the Seminoles boasted an impressive 12-0 record during the regular season and secured the ACC championship. However, after a disappointing loss on the road to North Carolina State, which featured two muffed punts, missed field goals, and turnovers, Florida State’s record has deteriorated to 5-6 overall and 2-6 within the ACC, placing them at the bottom of the conference standings.
As the pressure mounts on Norvell, concerns grow about his future with the program. Firing him would incur a substantial buyout of approximately $58.7 million, a hefty price for the university. Norvell was previously rewarded for his successful tenure, with a contract extension following a stellar 13-1 season in 2023, bringing the total value of his contract beyond $84 million through 2031. However, after a disappointing 2-10 season in 2024, adjustments were made, reducing his salary by about $4.5 million.
Florida State started the 2025 season with a surprising 31-17 win over the then-No. 8 Alabama, igniting hopes for a turnaround. Unfortunately, the team has struggled since then, managing only four additional wins. Over Norvell’s six seasons, the Seminoles hold a record of 38-32, highlighting the contrast between the double-digit win seasons of 2022 and 2023 and the challenges faced in recent years.
