In a candid interview with Rolling Stone UK, FKA twigs opened up about her creative journey leading to her upcoming album, “Eusexua,” set to be released in January 2025. One of the standout features of the album is a collaboration with North West, the 12-year-old daughter of renowned celebrities Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, who showcases her talent with a Japanese rap on the track “Childlike Things.”
FKA twigs, whose real name is Tahlia Debrett Barnett, shared her profound experience working with North. She reminisced about having written “Childlike Things” during her own early teenage years, marking it as one of her formative pieces. Twigs praised North’s maturity and emotional depth, stating, “I feel like she’s seen so much and she’s so mature in a lot of ways, especially emotionally.” The two artists bonded over intimate dinners, where North offered insights that resonated deeply with twigs. According to twigs, “I felt taken aback by her observations of humility that were very on the nose and very true to the things that I’ve learned as an adult.”
This collaboration is especially significant for twigs, providing a healing connection to her own childhood experiences with bullying and isolation. She expressed that working alongside North, whom she described as a “tenacious, confident friend,” was a meaningful opportunity to revisit her younger self. “To give the child in me, who was a bit of a loner when I wrote that song, a tenacious, confident friend like North West, to come and hang out with, was really special,” twigs stated.
FKA twigs continues to evolve her musical style with “Eusexua,” which will be her third studio album after “LP1” and “Magdalene.” She also revealed plans for a deluxe edition titled “Eusexua Afterglow,” which she regards as a significant extension of her artistic expression. Twigs described the sonic landscape of the album as “crystallised pieces of water,” highlighting the clarity and precision of her messages.
Emphasizing her artistic philosophy, twigs articulated the idea that while ideas may seem perfect in their initial form, they are meant to change over time. This perspective underlines the importance of growth and evolution within the creative process.
As anticipation builds for the album’s release, it’s evident that FKA twigs is not only reflecting on her own artistic journey but also nurturing the talents of the next generation, represented by North West. This collaboration exemplifies a beautiful intersection of experience and youth, promising a unique listening experience for fans.
