Two Finnish lawmakers are facing significant backlash for posting socially offensive photographs and videos depicting a slanted-eyes gesture, which is widely condemned as racially insensitive to individuals of Asian descent. Representatives of the ruling coalition parties in Finland are scheduled to convene on December 16 to discuss potential disciplinary actions against the parliamentarians, who are affiliated with the right-wing, anti-immigration Finns Party, a coalition partner in the current government.
This controversy emerged following the disqualification of a recent Miss Finland titleholder on December 11, after she shared an image mimicking upswept eyes, a gesture that prompted public outrage. One of the lawmakers, Juho Eerola, expressed his intention to defend the pageant winner, whom he deemed unfairly punished. Eerola stated in an interview with The Asahi Shimbun on December 15, “I am deeply sorry that my photo caused offense to Asian people,” adding that he is willing to apologize multiple times for his actions.
Responding to the contentious situation, Anne Sjoeholm, a spokesperson for the Prime Minister’s office, underscored Finland’s commitment to combat racism, stating, “There is no place for racism in Finland. Politicians have a responsibility to serve as examples in this respect.” This sentiment was echoed by Prime Minister Petteri Orpo, who described the posts as “childish” during a state radio interview on December 14.
In solidarity against the derogatory gesture, a Japanese man residing in Finland initiated an online petition demanding an investigation into anti-Asian discrimination, which has already amassed over 7,000 signatures as of December 14. The Finnish Embassy in Japan likewise acknowledged the need for “sustained and determined efforts” to confront racism, highlighting the importance of bringing discussions about experiences of discrimination to the forefront.
Historically, the slanted-eyes gesture has been used derogatorily to mock Asian individuals and is increasingly recognized as a prominent example of anti-Asian racism. In recent years, such portrayals have elicited outrage in various Western countries; for instance, in August, the Swiss watchmaker Swatch was compelled to apologize for an advertisement featuring an individual performing the offensive gesture.
