Filimone Jitoko Named Chancellor of University of Fiji, Signals Pacific Leadership Drive

Filimone Jitoko has officially taken on the role of chancellor at the University of Fiji, marking a significant moment in his career during the university’s graduation ceremony held at the Saweni campus this week. In his inaugural address, Jitoko expressed his dedication to fulfilling his responsibilities in line with the university’s Act, emphasizing principles of fairness, wisdom, and impartiality to support academic excellence and the institution’s research and community service objectives.

“The University of Fiji is not just a place of learning; it is a vital hub of knowledge, generating future leaders who will navigate the great ocean we call Pasifika,” Jitoko remarked, highlighting the university’s important role in cultivating leadership within the region. He encouraged graduates by stating, “Your degree is not an endpoint; it is the commencement of your preliminary point of service to this country, the Pacific, and beyond.”

Vice Chancellor Professor Shaista Shameem warmly welcomed Jitoko into his new position, noting his extensive experience as both the Honourable Speaker of Parliament and a former judge. She expressed confidence that his background in judicial practice and public service would greatly benefit the university community.

Prof. Shameem also hopes that Jitoko will engage actively with the university, despite the titular nature of his role. “While yours, by convention, Sir this is a titular role, I hope that you will, nevertheless, find the time to visit the university as often as your time allows and participate in our various activities and functions,” she remarked, humorously referencing the university’s lively spirit during sports events.

Jitoko’s ascension to the chancellorship signals a promising future for the University of Fiji, reinforcing its mission to empower students and foster a bright generation of leaders dedicated to regional service.
