Fiji has launched a nationwide Diabetes and Wellness Campaign, coinciding with a vibrant movement led by the Young Diabetes Fiji (YDF) program. This initiative empowers young individuals living with diabetes to convert their personal health journeys into catalysts for change across the nation.
The YDF has seen a remarkable increase in membership, rising from 50 to 80 engaged members under the age of 30, with many new participants joining from the Northern Division. Taabish Akbar, Executive Chair of Diabetes Fiji, highlights the importance of these young advocates, who have been trained as ambassadors to share their experiences and raise awareness within schools, homes, and community spaces.
Akbar explained, “We continue to support our young members with glucometers, testing strips, lancets, alcohol swabs, and psychosocial support. YDF members have received ambassador training, empowering them to advocate in various settings.” This support is crucial as it not only provides necessary medical supplies but also equips these individuals with the confidence and knowledge to promote diabetes awareness effectively.
Looking forward, the YDF team is preparing for educational camps during the school break, designed to enhance connections, foster learning, and develop leadership skills among participants. This energetic approach introduces a refreshing perspective to the diabetes dialogue in Fiji—one that is built on hope and compassion rather than solely on statistics and policy discussions.
The urgency of the YDF’s efforts is reinforced by previous findings that many young people with diabetes remain undiagnosed or disengaged from treatment, often due to stigma or a lack of understanding. Advocates stress that educational outreach and a supportive environment are vital in helping young individuals manage their health challenges without feeling isolated.
As communities continue to rally behind these initiatives, there is a growing optimism that broadening awareness and education will lead to healthier lifestyle choices, fostering resilience among young Fijians with diabetes. This collaborative endeavor symbolizes a significant step towards addressing the immediate and long-term challenges associated with diabetes while inspiring future generations.
