Women are taking the initiative in small business leadership at Laqere Market, particularly in the seafood sector, significantly contributing to their families’ wellbeing. A notable example is Silina Vunicakau, whose journey embodies resilience and determination after experiencing personal loss.
Following the death of her husband, Vunicakau faced overwhelming challenges as the primary provider for her family of four. Undeterred, she embraced entrepreneurship at the market, initially focusing on seafood products like seaweed, known locally as lumi, while also selling juices. Her commitment to her business has not only allowed her to maintain her household but has also paved the way for her children to pursue higher education.
Recently, her hard work has culminated in a significant achievement. With the profits from her seaweed enterprise, Vunicakau was able to invest in a carrier lorry, which she now uses to transport her goods. Additionally, she has started renting it out, creating further revenue streams for her growing business.
“This is good money when you can enjoy the sweat, sacrifice, and effort you put into the work and reap the fruit,” Vunicakau reflects, indicating the satisfaction derived from her entrepreneurial journey.
Her story is part of a broader movement in Fiji, where women are increasingly stepping into leadership roles in small businesses. They are transforming personal adversities into opportunities, strengthening not only their families but also their communities through entrepreneurial initiatives. This trend underscores the potential of women-led businesses to foster resilience and contribute positively to society, providing a hopeful outlook for the future of entrepreneurship in the region.
