The Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) has taken a significant step toward inclusivity by establishing a gender task force aimed at addressing disparities in workplace facilities. Chief Executive Seru Soderberg made this announcement during his remarks on the Employment Relations (Amendment) Bill to the Standing Committee on Economic Affairs.
Soderberg pointed out that WAF has historically been a male-dominated organization, which has resulted in operational sites primarily having male washrooms. He stated, “We are actively working towards building new washrooms to accommodate for our female colleagues. I don’t see any issues with facilitating a special area to facilitate breastfeeding.” This effort is part of WAF’s commitment to enhancing workplace amenities and ensuring that women, including young mothers, feel supported in their work environments.
The Committee Chair, Sakiusa Tubuna, supported these initiatives, noting that the proposed Bill contains provisions aimed at improving workplace conditions for women, including the establishment of facilities designed for breastfeeding mothers. This move reflects the evolving demographics of the workforce and the necessity to create an inclusive environment for all employees.
The establishment of the gender task force and the modifications to workplace facilities symbolize a positive shift towards gender equality in Fiji’s workforce. As workplaces adapt to be more inclusive, such progressive changes can foster a better and more supportive environment for all employees, promoting overall job satisfaction and productivity.
