Roko Ilaisa Tabete, a promising young athlete and deputy head boy at International School Suva, is broadening his training by adding hurdles to his repertoire alongside his primary event, the 400-meter race. At just 16 years old and hailing from Matuku, Lau, Tabete has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to athletics, consistently representing his schools in the prestigious Coca-Cola Games for five consecutive years.

Tabete’s athletic portfolio also includes competing on an international stage, where he proudly represented Fiji in the 400 meters during the 2024 Oceania Games. Regarding this invaluable experience, he highlighted the differences between national and international competitions, expressing how they have shaped his mindset as an athlete. “I got to have a taste of the international competitions. It’s a much bigger upgrade compared to the national Coca-Cola Games. These experiences helped me improve my mindset as an athlete,” he remarked.

Under the guidance of his coach, Albert Miller, Tabete has recently embraced hurdles in his training. This event requires unique techniques and skills that challenge him as he transitions from flat sprinting. However, Tabete enthusiastically welcomes the new experience. “Hurdles is a unique experience compared to running flat,” he stated. “It’s been quite a challenge, but I’m up for it. I really enjoy the technique and skill involved.”

Currently, he employs hurdles mainly as a means to enhance his stamina and endurance for the 400 meters. However, he recognizes the potential to further pursue hurdles competitively in the future. “Right now, I’m using it as training for the 400 just so I can get up my stamina and endurance. But with my experience in hurdles so far, I think it’s probably one of my potentials to take up later on,” Tabete noted.

While he has yet to secure an individual gold medal, he was part of a record-setting relay team in the Suva 1 zone last year, setting benchmarks that highlight his talent. Motivated by his aspirations and experiences, Tabete looks forward to the upcoming season, targeting either a gold medal or a top-three finish.

His journey showcases the adaptable nature of athletic development and illustrates how taking on new challenges like hurdles can foster growth and provide a competitive advantage on both national and international platforms. With a promising future ahead, Roko Ilaisa Tabete’s dedication to his sport and willingness to evolve are sure to inspire young athletes everywhere.
