Restoration efforts at the Fiji Sugar Corporation’s Rarawai Mill are making significant strides, with essential mechanical, electrical, and control system repairs underway following a major fire incident earlier this year. Sugar Industry Minister Charan Jeath Singh has announced that the Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) has rolled out a comprehensive rehabilitation plan designed not only to restore the mill’s operations but also to enhance overall safety and efficiency.
As of October, the project is progressing well, with mechanical and civil works reported to be 50% complete, while electrical repairs stand at 36%, and instrumentation work is at 33%. Factory trials are scheduled to begin in late November, and Singh has assured stakeholders that the planned restart of crushing operations in early December remains on track. Although some infrastructure upgrades, such as roofing and the installation of standby diesel generators, are expected to continue until May 2026, they will not disrupt the operational timeline.
The FSC is navigating challenges related to the procurement and shipping of imported components, all while adhering to stringent quality and safety standards during the repair process. Singh highlighted the importance of these rehabilitation efforts in sustaining the national milling capacity, which is vital for the livelihood of sugarcane farmers throughout Fiji.
While final assessments regarding repair costs are still underway as technical teams and insurers finalize their evaluations, ongoing conversations indicate a strong commitment to support farmers during this challenging period, including logistical and financial assistance as they redirect cane to other mills.
The restoration of the Rarawai Mill is viewed as a critical advancement for the resilience of Fiji’s sugar industry, underscoring the dedicated efforts of both the government and the FSC in addressing and overcoming challenges. A sense of optimism prevails regarding the recovery of the sugar sector, fueled by proactive strategies and collaborative initiatives aimed at ensuring stability and sustainability for all parties involved. These reconstruction efforts not only strive for a return to full operations but also promise enhanced infrastructure and improved safety protocols for the future.
