The Fijian government has confirmed that there are currently no intentions to discuss succession for Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka while legal appeals are underway. Information Minister Lynda Tabuya addressed this issue at a recent press conference, stressing the importance of respecting the judicial process. She noted that the appeal process could be prolonged, involving both the Court of Appeal and possibly the Supreme Court.
Tabuya stated that there is no urgency to make leadership changes as the Cabinet has unanimously rejected any proposals for the Prime Minister’s resignation. She emphasized that there is robust support for Rabuka from within the Cabinet, reiterating that he should continue to lead the country during these challenging times. “There’s no urgency to it because the appeal process will take some time,” she remarked.
The People’s Alliance Party (PAP) has also shown steadfast support for Rabuka, especially following remarks he made about the possibility of resignation. PAP General Secretary Sila Balawa clarified that these comments had been misinterpreted, reinforcing that the party stands firmly behind the Prime Minister in light of ongoing legal matters. Balawa expressed confidence that Rabuka would follow legal counsel and reaffirmed the party’s intention for him to lead into the next election.
As Fiji approaches an election year, Balawa acknowledged that public scrutiny may be aimed at the Prime Minister, along with challenges related to his age and leadership experience. However, he contended that such criticisms are often unfounded and highlighted the party’s belief in Rabuka’s leadership capabilities.
