The Ra Maternity Hospital in Fiji is proudly celebrating its 55th anniversary, reflecting on decades of reliable service and impactful contributions to community healthcare. Established in 1970 as a modest seven-bed Catholic maternity unit, the hospital has since blossomed into a thriving institution recognized with the prestigious Baby Friendly Hospital award. This achievement underscores its commitment to providing essential maternity care through a unique partnership with the Roman Catholic Church and the Ministry of Health.
With an affordable admission fee of just $30, Ra Maternity Hospital removes the financial burden often associated with maternity care. The services provided include gowns, clothing for mothers and babies, and essential items like baby wipes, soaps, and diapers, which are particularly beneficial for families from remote areas.
Chief Nursing and Midwifery Officer Colleen Wilson emphasized the enduring strength of the hospital, highlighting its ability to overcome challenges such as the devastating impacts of Severe Tropical Cyclone Winston in 2016. She expressed hope for the hospital’s future growth and development, stating, “I believe that we can develop and grow this institution.”
Former midwife Kinisimere Senikuta, who dedicated nearly 16 years to the hospital, noted a remarkable increase in admissions, with monthly births rising significantly—from just 10 in previous years to sometimes 15 to 20 in recent months. This growth not only showcases the enhanced demand for the hospital’s services but also signifies its strengthened reputation in the region.
Relieving charge nurse Isoa Natui attributed the hospital’s success to its mission-driven approach and strong community support. As Ra Maternity Hospital embarks on another 55 years of operation, stakeholders remain optimistic about its continued evolution and ability to meet the growing healthcare needs of families in Fiji. The journey forward looks promising, as the institution aims to enhance its services further while continuing to support mothers and infants through compassionate care.
