The agricultural sector in the Northern Division is poised for significant enhancement, thanks to recent announcements by Assistant Minister for Agriculture and Waterways, Inosi Kuridrani. The plan aims to address the overwhelming demands on the existing Agricultural Marketing Authority facility located in Savusavu, which currently services the regions of Bua, Macuata, and Cakaudrove. This facility is reportedly struggling to accommodate the storage needs of local farmers, impacting their ability to manage and store their produce effectively.
In response to this pressing issue, the Ministry of Agriculture has unveiled plans to develop new storage depots in Nabouwalu and Dreketi. This initiative is expected to alleviate logistical difficulties while simultaneously bolstering the agricultural infrastructure in the Northern Division.
Kuridrani emphasized the critical role of agriculture in driving national development and highlighted the necessity for cooperation among various government ministries. Such collaboration is vital for establishing the facilities required to empower rural communities.
By enhancing storage capabilities, the initiative aims not only to ensure better preservation of agricultural produce but also to minimize losses and maximize farmers’ returns. This approach reinforces agriculture as a pivotal element in advancing Fiji’s economic and social development, underscoring a commitment to foster growth and sustainability in the agricultural sector. The optimistic outlook for the future of agriculture in the Northern Division presents an opportunity for rural communities to thrive, highlighting the government’s dedication to improving the livelihoods of those who contribute to this essential industry.
