Fiji Launches Pilot Grants to Boost Small Tourism Operators in Vanua Levu and Taveuni

Fiji’s Northern Division Launches Pilot Tourism Grants for Vanua Levu and Taveuni

The Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation has announced the next phase of the Na Vualiku Tourism Development Program, as presented by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, Viliame Gavoka, in Parliament. This new phase is set to introduce a pilot grants program aimed at Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises, alongside community-based tourism groups.

The official launch of the program is scheduled for December 11 in Labasa and Savusavu, followed by an event on December 12 in Taveuni. The primary objective of this initiative is to provide support to small tourism operators in Vanua Levu and Taveuni, enabling them to expand their businesses through financial assistance and practical training. This focus includes essential contributors to the local economy, such as mat weavers, eco-guides, small guesthouse owners, and cultural groups dedicated to sharing their rich heritage with visitors.

Key features of the program highlight a streamlined grant application process, enhanced links between improved infrastructure and income opportunities, and guidance conforming to the Integrated Tourism Master Plan. The framework of the program has been developed with input from local communities through consultations held in the Northern Division.

DPM Gavoka has urged community members to engage actively and prepare their Expressions of Interest in advance of the launch. He reassured that the applications would be accepted starting in December and emphasized that the selection process would be conducted with fairness and transparency.

The initiative encourages communities and small enterprises to submit proposals that reflect their culture, environment, and skills. To further support applicants, the program will offer training and advisory services to assist in crafting compelling proposals.

This initiative highlights the significance of placing local communities at the forefront of tourism development, creating opportunities for families, and supporting sustainable growth in the Northern region. The forthcoming application openings during the December launch events present a vital opportunity for local operators to elevate their initiatives and improve their operations, paving the way for enriched tourism experiences in the area.
