Beginning on New Year’s Day, Fiji will see a modest rise in fuel prices, as confirmed by the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC). The cost of motor spirit will increase by 4 cents, bringing the price to $2.61 per litre. Diesel will experience a more considerable jump, rising by 8 cents to $2.35 per litre. Kerosene users will encounter the largest hike, with prices soaring to $1.86, marking a 5.08 percent increase.

These price adjustments are mainly due to unfavorable changes in international refined fuel prices and freight rates observed in November 2025, compounded by the ongoing weakness of the US dollar.

In a positive turn for consumers, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) prices are set to decrease. The price for a 4.5kg cylinder will be reduced to $13.33, while the 12kg cylinder will drop by 78 cents to $35.55. This decline results from a 3.16 percent decrease in the Butane Contract Price, even as higher international freight costs persist.

To ensure compliance with the new price ceilings, the FCCC will dispatch enforcement teams to conduct inspections across the nation. Consumers are encouraged to report any cases of overcharging or hoarding to the relevant authorities.

While the increases in fuel prices may pose financial challenges for many, the reduction in LPG costs offers essential relief to households, illustrating the fluctuating dynamics of the global fuel market. This balance of increases and decreases reflects the complexities that consumers face in today’s economic landscape, yet provides a hopeful outlook with the lower LPG prices supporting household budgets as the New Year begins.
