Efforts to revitalize the sugar industry will be advanced by the incoming Sugar Industry Minister, Tomasi Tunabuna, as confirmed by outgoing Minister Charan Jeath Singh. The two ministers discussed future plans for the industry during a recent official visit to India.

Singh emphasized the importance of continuing the initiatives he has laid down, particularly the 15 assistance programs implemented over the past three years. He is optimistic that, with sustained efforts, sugar cane production in the country can rebound from approximately 1.3 million tonnes to an anticipated 1.5 million tonnes this year—a significant increase of 200,000 tonnes.

Looking ahead, Singh expressed confidence that the industry could ultimately restore production to previous levels of 2.5 million tonnes within the next five years. He acknowledged the global fluctuations impacting the sugar industry but maintained a positive outlook, stating the need for commitment to production growth.

Singh also noted that with plans for a state-of-the-art sugar mill, it is essential to achieve production levels of 2.5 million tonnes. The upcoming minister will have the critical responsibility of overseeing the establishment of this multi-million dollar facility, which is planned for the Western Division in locations such as Rakiraki, Tavua, or Ba.

As Singh transitions to the Public Enterprises portfolio on January 19, he leaves the sugar sector in the hands of Minister Tunabuna, who will continue to build on the foundation laid during Singh’s tenure. The industry’s future appears hopeful, with new opportunities for growth and investment on the horizon.
