Chief Justice Salesi Temo has underscored the importance of integrity and professionalism for Fiji’s newly admitted lawyers as they begin their legal careers. Addressing 24 graduates from the University of Fiji’s School of Law at a Bar admission ceremony, he highlighted that their admission signifies the start of a significant and impactful role in society.
Justice Temo stressed that the law serves as a foundation for societal stability, remarking, “The law, which is fundamental to the concept of the rule of law, is what holds society together.” He warned that neglecting the law could result in chaos and suffering within the community.
As the newest officers of the High Court, the graduates have a crucial responsibility to protect citizens’ rights and ensure that justice prevails. “You have the ability to clear the cobwebs that stand in the way of citizens’ legal rights, their freedoms, their protection under the law, and their pursuit of justice,” he emphasized.
The Chief Justice urged the new lawyers to maintain a strong reputation within their profession, noting its essential role in securing clients and delivering justice effectively. “You will be like ambassadors for the legal profession. Treat your clients properly and fairly,” he advised.
Justice Temo also recognized the challenges that legal practitioners face today, both in their personal lives and in their relationships with clients. He highlighted the importance of ongoing education and ethical behavior, reaffirming that a lawyer’s journey extends well beyond academic training.
By encouraging the graduates to see themselves as future leaders in the legal sector, Justice Temo provided a hopeful vision of their capacity for positive change. Upholding principles of justice and fairness will enable these young lawyers to build public trust in the legal system and make meaningful contributions to their communities.
