Fiji is stepping up its fight against the illicit drug trade, a challenge exacerbated by inadequate border controls and past leadership failures, as highlighted by Ratu Meli Tora, the spokesman for Tui Vuda. He pointed out that the current drug crisis is rooted in the negligence of former leaders who failed to address rising issues effectively.
Ratu Meli is urging traditional leaders to adopt a more active role in their communities, emphasizing the need for closer monitoring of activities within their vanua. He expressed the urgency of “micromanaging” local affairs to better tackle drug-related challenges. Moreover, he has called upon community leaders to strengthen local committees and engage in continuous dialogue regarding the drug crisis.
Together with the chairman of the Ba Provincial Council, Ratu Meli advocates for improved cooperation among various authorities, including the police, military, and Fiji Navy. They emphasize that a coordinated response is essential, as past efforts to combat the drug trade have often been fragmented. Ratu Meli stated, “Now is the time for them to work together to protect our people, our vanua, and our future.”
In an encouraging move, the Vanua o Vuda plans to impose a ban on drugs and related activities starting February 2. This decision, which follows talks with village elders and a notable rise in drug incidents in the Western Division, represents a proactive measure by traditional leaders to address the pressing issue. Ratu Meli noted that a thorough survey of villagers has been conducted to foster effective community monitoring.
As part of this initiative, the enforcement of curfews is anticipated, with a proposed 9 PM curfew for children and an 11 PM curfew for adults to enhance village safety. Additionally, there might be restrictions on kava sessions at night to allow men to concentrate on community security. Ratu Meli emphasized the importance of prioritizing the health and well-being of the younger generation, advocating for a shift in disciplinary approaches to adapt to contemporary challenges.
Highlighting the role of families in this effort, Ratu Meli encourages parents to educate their children about the dangers of drug use. By fostering family unity and respect for the law, communities can work toward a more secure future and regain control over their neighborhoods.
