Fiji’s Indigenous Youth-Led Marine Park Wins OceanLove Innovation Award 2025

Fiji has earned notable recognition at the OceanLove Innovation Award 2025 for its exceptional indigenous youth-led initiative, the Naidiri Marine Biodiversity Park. This prestigious accolade was unveiled during the Smart City Expo World Congress in Barcelona, an event that drew in over 25,000 participants from across the globe.

The Naidiri Marine Biodiversity Park project has positioned Fiji as a frontrunner in ocean conservation and innovation. This year saw an impressive 260 submissions from 64 countries vying for the award, all presenting groundbreaking ideas aimed at tackling ecological challenges.

This initiative is distinguished as an indigenous youth-led ocean literacy project that blends traditional knowledge with scientific education, empowering students and local communities throughout Fiji. Through peer-led education, practical expeditions, and hands-on learning experiences, the project fosters a deeper understanding of coral reef ecosystems. The initiative’s community engagement, marked by strong local ownership and significant conservation efforts, greatly impressed the judging panel.

Judges recognized the influential role of indigenous leadership within the project, praising its commitment to cultivating a culture of conservation and environmental stewardship. The success of the Naidiri Marine Biodiversity Park is part of broader movements in Fiji, including partnerships with organizations such as Blue Prosperity Fiji (BPF) and the National Geographic Society’s Pristine Seas, which are driving initiatives to explore and protect Fiji’s marine biodiversity.

Fiji’s commitment to ocean conservation is further reflected in upcoming projects like the scheduled expedition in 2025, underscoring a collaborative approach amongst scientists and local communities. These initiatives highlight the integration of traditional knowledge and advanced technology to protect vibrant marine ecosystems and promote sustainable practices.

Such endeavors instill hope, showcasing the potential of local communities, indigenous wisdom, and scientific inquiry to further sustainable ocean management. The recognition awarded to the Naidiri Marine Biodiversity Park stands as a symbol of optimism, promoting a unified vision of harmony between nature and the well-being of communities, ultimately striving to preserve Fiji’s precious marine resources for future generations.
