Digital mapping training for agricultural officers is ushering in a new era of pineapple exports to New Zealand, marking a vital advancement in the agricultural sector. The Ministry of Agriculture, Waterways, and Sugar Industry is bolstering support for frontline workers by offering hands-on technology training aimed at enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of farming operations.
Over the past year, officers from the Land Resources Planning Division have conducted a series of training sessions across Ba Province, including locations such as Tavua, Ba, Lautoka, and Nadi. Participants learned to harness innovative tools like Survey123 and ArcGIS to facilitate effective farm data collection. This initiative has led to a detailed survey of pineapple production, which has been instrumental in enabling the shipment of locally sourced pineapples to New Zealand. This development not only highlights the quality of Fiji’s agricultural products but also opens up new income avenues for local farmers.
Recently, the ministry wrapped up a Basic GIS and Survey123 training course in Tailevu Province, further strengthening the digital mapping and reporting skills of the officers. With these enhanced capabilities, they are now better positioned to oversee crop production and farming activities, ultimately leading to increased productivity.
The Ministry underscores that improved data management will significantly elevate planning and output levels. This enhancement is anticipated to provide farmers with greater access to local and international markets, thereby supporting economic growth within the agricultural sector.
