The Fiji Performing Right Association Music Awards is gearing up for a highly anticipated return this year, providing a vital platform for local music creators while introducing a new category dedicated to traditional storytelling and language.
Isireli Gumatua, the Chairman of the FIPRA Board of Directors, announced that the awards will be held in May after a two-year break. A highlight of this year’s event is the addition of the “Best Sigidrigi” category, which aims to honor musical works that embody the cultural essence, language, and everyday experiences of Fijian life.
Gumatua emphasized that the revival of the awards signifies a recommitment to recognizing the contributions of composers and music innovators who have significantly impacted Fiji’s music scene both locally and internationally. He stated, “The awards aim to recognize songs that reflect culture, language, and everyday experiences through music. Their work continues to influence the country’s music scene.”
Scheduled for May 9th, the awards night will focus on celebrating creativity and preserving cultural heritage while ensuring that local music remains visible and appreciated. Gumatua pointed out that this event plays a crucial role in showcasing Fijian music to a broader audience.
This year’s awards will consist of 15 categories, with submissions opening immediately and closing on the 27th of this month. To be eligible, songs must have been officially released during the 2025 calendar year and registered with FIPRA.
The categories offered this year include Best English Song, Best Itaukei Song, Best Hindi Song, Best Gospel Song, Best Hip Hop Song, Best Sigidrigi Song, Best Artist of the Year, Best New Artist, Most Popular Music Video, Most Popular Song, International Achievement, Best Composition, and Outstanding Service to Fijian Music.
