Fiji’s rural electrification progress was highlighted at COP30 in Belém, Brazil, where the nation showcased how renewable energy is enhancing the lives of rural and maritime communities while bolstering long-term climate resilience. At the High-Level Energy Dialogue on Catalysing Rural Resilience, Dr. Sivendra Michael, the Permanent Secretary for Environment and Climate Change, emphasized that the Fiji Rural Electrification Fund (FREF) serves as a model for utilizing clean energy to drive resilience, equity, and opportunity for vulnerable communities.
The initiative has successfully provided clean and reliable electricity to over 6,500 individuals across 20 rural communities. “Every solar panel we install powers opportunity and strengthens livelihoods,” Dr. Michael stated, underscoring the tangible benefits of renewable energy. A significant aspect of this program includes the construction of solar mini grids in Yadrana and Salia in Lau, Kioa in Cakaudrove, and Yacata, all set for completion by May 2026. Each system is engineered to endure Category 5 cyclones and is managed by community cooperatives to ensure long-term sustainability.
In recent months, assessments for 21 additional sites in Kadavu, Lomaiviti, and Lau have been completed, with plans to expand infrastructure to seven new communities selected for further development. Dr. Michael pointed out that the early successes seen on Vio Island continue to inform future initiatives, embodying Fiji’s commitment to renewable energy solutions.
Moreover, he acknowledged the ongoing support from the Australian Infrastructure Financing Facility for the Pacific, while stressing the urgency to simplify access to climate finance for small islands and communities. Dr. Michael reiterated Fiji’s ambitious targets of achieving 100 percent renewable energy by 2030 and net-zero emissions by 2050, reinforcing the island nation’s pledge to sustainable development.
