A new music initiative aimed at empowering the youth of Suva was launched as part of a community effort to address the concerning trends of drug use and excessive time spent at kava bars. Organizers emphasize the need for constructive activities that provide an alternative to potentially harmful social environments.
Sandeep Narayan Singh, leader of Hindu Unity, introduced the concept of “Bhajan Jamming,” designed to draw young people away from drugs and reconnect them with their spiritual roots through music and communal participation. He highlighted the alarming reality that many youths find themselves idle at kava bars for four to five hours, becoming increasingly susceptible to substance abuse and negative influences.
“There’s a need to create a more uplifting environment,” Mr. Singh remarked. The initiative is focused specifically on attracting youths who have distanced themselves from traditional devotional practices by utilizing music in an informal setting, making it accessible and engaging for the younger generation.
The “Bhajan Jamming” program features a collective singing experience led by Anubhav Musicals, encouraging participants to join in rather than merely observe. Mr. Singh expressed the hope that this approach would invigorate interest among young people in spiritual activities and provide them with a sense of community and purpose.
Honoring the memory of the late Reverend Simione Tugi, who played a significant role in community leadership and drug prevention, this initiative seeks to maintain ongoing engagement with the youth. Music director Ranil Kumar stated that this first-of-its-kind event in Fiji transforms devotion from a performance-based activity into an engaging community event. “It’s all about coming together, singing, and dancing, and it leads us into a deeper state of devotion,” he explained.
Suneet Mehta, the High Commissioner of India to Fiji, noted that the gathering reflected the cultural values that have supported the Indo-Fijian community through generations. He underscored the importance of preserving cultural heritage and the spiritual connections that resonate within the community.
With initiatives like “Bhajan Jamming,” the hope is to provide positive outlets for youth, encouraging them to embrace spirituality through music while steering clear of the challenges that currently threaten their well-being.
