A committee advocating for the welfare of senior citizens is preparing to submit a significant proposal to the government, calling for a 20 percent discount on essential goods and services in the upcoming 2026 National Budget. Sandeep Narayan Singh, a prominent businessman and member of the committee, voiced the urgency of this measure during the public budget submission process. He noted that many nations have acknowledged the critical contributions of their older citizens to national progress, emphasizing the need for similar recognition in Fiji.
Singh expressed concern over the increasing financial challenges that seniors face due to escalating living costs. He indicated that the committee is also seeking additional support measures to assist this demographic, a response to growing economic pressures. Citing previous criticism directed at the Senior Citizens Day event, Singh highlighted the strong public turnout and emotional engagement as indicative of a broader societal recognition of the issues confronting elders.
He stated, “Our budget submission to the government of the day will be that we allow senior citizens to avail of a 20% discount on various essential supplies.” In his remarks, Singh referenced successful initiatives in other countries that could serve as a blueprint for action in Fiji.
Complementing Singh’s efforts, Maciu Nalumisa, the Minister for Housing and Local Government, reaffirmed the Coalition Government’s commitment to supporting senior citizens. During the recent celebrations for International Day for Senior Citizens, he underscored the role of older individuals as the foundation of Fiji’s communities and institutions. Nalumisa detailed the ongoing initiatives aimed at improving healthcare access, strengthening social protections, and creating opportunities for active participation among seniors in community life, such as enhancing public spaces to be more senior-friendly.
He further encouraged younger generations to foster intergenerational relationships, emphasizing the invaluable insights that senior citizens offer. This collaborative approach not only aims to support the elderly but also seeks to leverage their wisdom for the greater good of society.
As this proposal gains traction, the focus on the rights and welfare of senior citizens reflects a growing recognition of their vital role in the fabric of the community, proposing a progressive step towards ensuring that their contributions are honored and supported.
