Fiji Gears Up for Remembrance Day 2025: Suva Braces for National Ceremony

Fiji’s 2025 Remembrance Day: Honoring Heroes, Uniting Communities

Preparations are well underway for the 2025 Remembrance Day, a significant occasion dedicated to honoring the sacrifices made by military personnel. The Ministry of Defence and Veterans Affairs has officially announced this year’s events, scheduled for November 11, a date that has been observed across Commonwealth nations since the conclusion of the First World War.

Permanent Secretary Mason Smith conveyed that this yearly commemoration is a profound reminder of the valor exhibited by those who lost their lives in service to preserve peace, particularly in the Pacific region. The main national event will take place at the National War Memorial in Suva, starting at 11 AM. To facilitate participation, veterans will be provided transportation from the Republic of Fiji Navy’s Stanley Brown Base to join the city march, culminating in the official ceremony at Ratu Sukuna Park.

Remembrance Day gatherings have a history rich with poignant tributes and personal narratives. Attendees such as Lavenia Volaukitoga, who has honored her late husband’s memory for three decades, and Cynthia Latchman, who reflects on her father’s military service alongside cherished memories, exemplify the resilience of families who have faced loss. Their stories highlight how these commemorations not only pay tribute to the fallen but also foster community unity, bringing together generations in a shared remembrance.

As the nation gears up to observe this solemn occasion, it serves as a hopeful reminder of the necessity to remember those who have served. This observance not only underscores the sacrifices made but also enhances the understanding and appreciation of peace and freedom that current generations enjoy. The focus remains on honoring the enduring legacy of bravery and commitment, which continues to inspire and shape future generations.
