Fiji's 2006 Parliament Reunites for Reconciliation

Fiji’s 2006 Parliament Alumni Plan Reunion

Former members of the 2006 Parliament are set to gather this weekend under the leadership of ex-Speaker Pita Nacuva. This meeting will bring together individuals who served as members and senators in the House of Representatives during their brief tenure at the old Veiuto Parliament in Suva.

As highlighted in a press release from Nacuva’s team, the gathering holds special significance because all participants were in office for only six months before being removed from Parliament on December 6, 2006. Despite the years that have elapsed, Mr. Nacuva stresses the need to recognize the constitutional roles these individuals played during their time in office.

This event is envisioned not just as an opportunity for reunion, but also as a platform to help restore the reputation of the 2006 Parliament and formally conclude a contentious chapter in Fiji’s political history. The meeting symbolizes a hopeful step towards reconciliation and recognition, enabling former members to reflect on their experiences and the effects of their brief governance. The effort aims to foster understanding and healing, providing a constructive avenue for addressing past challenges while looking towards a more unified future in Fijian politics.
