Lania Alexander Robertson, a 19-year-old from the village of Rokovuaka in Nalawa, Ra, is making significant strides in Fiji’s maritime landscape by exemplifying the potential of young women to challenge and transcend traditional limitations. With Scottish heritage passed down through her maternal line, Ms. Robertson’s path has been characterized by resilience and optimism, largely influenced by her single mother, Christina Aileen Robertson. Her mother has instilled a belief that true strength arises from a positive mindset, irrespective of life’s challenges.
Recently, Ms. Robertson became the only female recipient of a prestigious scholarship from Swire Shipping, a critical component of the Madigi Vou initiative. This scholarship will enable her to pursue a Diploma in Marine Engineering (Level 5) at the Pacific Centre for Maritime Studies at Fiji National University. For Ms. Robertson, this academic opportunity represents the realization of a long-held aspiration.
“Marine engineering has always been my dream,” she affirmed, showcasing her determination to carve a space for herself in a field predominantly occupied by men. The support from her mother has been a pivotal element in her journey, encouraging her to confront societal norms boldly and to pursue her passions with unwavering resolve.
Despite the existing gender imbalances in the maritime sector, Ms. Robertson is driven by the desire to become a role model for other women interested in this field. Reflecting on the significance of her scholarship, she stated, “This scholarship means more than financial support; it means opportunity, belief, and a future I once only imagined. I want to prove that women belong in maritime engineering and that with the right support, we can succeed and inspire others to follow.”
