Dr. Ratu Joji Malani, a distinguished Fijian medical professional and Turaga na Gonesau, has been awarded the Honorary Doctor of Science degree by the University of Otago in New Zealand. This esteemed honor, typically presented to individuals who have made notable contributions to the university, was conferred during a ceremony last Saturday, where Dr. Malani was accompanied by his family.

During this momentous occasion, Dr. Malani expressed his deep pride in his alma mater, enhancing the celebration by presenting the university with a portrait of the late Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara, who was also awarded an Honorary Doctorate by Otago.

With a remarkable 43-year career in general medicine focusing on gastroenterology, nephrology, and chest medicine, Dr. Malani’s journey in medicine began with an MBCHB from the Otago Medical School. His professional path led him to serve as an assistant Clinical Professor at the University of Hawaii, followed by a position as Associate Professor of Medicine at the Fiji National University. Currently, he is a Consultant Physician and Nephrologist at Oceania Hospitals Pte Ltd in Suva.

Dr. Malani’s accomplishments not only reflect his personal commitment to medicine but also underscore his dedication to improving healthcare across the Pacific region. His recognition by the University of Otago is a testament to the significant influence he has had within both academic and medical circles, inspiring future generations of medical practitioners.
