The Swire Shipping Fijian Drua has officially announced its squad for the 2026 Shop N Save Super Rugby Pacific season, highlighting a significant transition within the team with the departure of former captain Meli Derenalagi. In a move that emphasizes the club’s commitment to nurturing local talent, the Drua has promoted four players from its Development program to full professional contracts. These players—Isikeli Basiyalo, Aisea Nawai, Maika Tuitubou, and Kavaia Tagivetaua—are now eligible for selection in the main squad, marking a pivotal step for the Drua as it fosters the next generation of players.
Head Coach Glen Jackson expressed his enthusiasm for these upcoming talents, stating that their advancement is indicative of the club’s vision for sustainable success through investment in its pathways. “The promotion of Kavaia, Maika, Basiyalo, and Nawai from Drua Development to the main squad is another cause for celebration. They’ve worked hard to earn these upgrades — it’s brilliant for them and bolsters our squad significantly,” Jackson remarked.
Derenalagi’s absence signifies the closing of an important chapter in the Drua’s evolving history. As an Olympic gold medalist in rugby sevens, Derenalagi played an instrumental role in establishing the Drua’s identity in Super Rugby Pacific, ensuring a competitive foothold for the team in international rugby.
Meanwhile, the formation of the 2026 squad remains strong, fortified by the experience of 29 capped Flying Fijians and 13 “Drua Originals” from the team’s inaugural season in 2022. The recruitment of several new players adds depth to the lineup. Among the six new recruits are Flying Fijian lock Temo Mayanavanua from Northampton Saints, Super Rugby veteran Manasa Mataele, and former Wallaby halfback Issak Fines-Leleiwasa, who has committed to representing Fiji due to his Tailevu roots.
Jackson highlighted the strong combination of seasoned experience and emerging talent, creating a squad poised for both competitiveness and a long-term vision. The Drua is increasing its home presence with seven home matches in the upcoming season, including a landmark first Super Rugby Pacific match in Ba. “Our players love playing at home in front of their families, friends, and the Drua Nation,” Jackson stated. “To play in Ba for the first time ever will be truly special for the team.”
As the new season approaches, the Fijian Drua stands at a crossroads, balanced between a rich tradition and the exciting potential of fresh talent. Their commitment to developing homegrown players while integrating experienced recruits sets a hopeful tone for their aspirations within Super Rugby Pacific. Fans can eagerly anticipate thrilling performances on the rugby field as the Drua embarks on this promising new chapter.
