Fiji Wins Global Backing for Coral Reef Climate Resilience at UNEA-7

Fiji has celebrated a significant victory at the Seventh United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-7) by achieving consensus on its resolution titled “Accelerating Global Action to Promote the Climate Resilience of Coral Reefs.” This milestone marks the first of 17 resolutions under negotiation to gain endorsement from Member States, showcasing notable international acknowledgment of Fiji’s pivotal role in advancing ocean and climate action.

The negotiations leading to this success were marked by intensity and complexity, with delegates engaging in discussions late into the night over the past week. Fiji’s delegation, spearheaded by the Permanent Secretary for Environment and the Director of Environment, adeptly navigated a range of scientific, environmental, and geopolitical challenges to secure this agreement. The final session concluded at 1 AM, culminating in a unanimous consensus on the comprehensive document.

As UNEA-7 progresses with only three days remaining, discussions on the remaining resolutions are ongoing. Fiji has expressed its gratitude to all nations and partners for their collaboration and support throughout this arduous process.

This early achievement not only underscores Fiji’s leadership in global environmental diplomacy but also reinforces its steadfast commitment to protecting vulnerable coral reef ecosystems and supporting the communities that depend on them. The successful endorsement of this resolution marks a hopeful step forward in the global fight against climate change and the preservation of marine biodiversity.
