A significant bilateral meeting focusing on strengthening relations between Fiji and the United States took place in Suva today. The discussions centered around enhancing economic cooperation, ensuring regional stability, and upholding shared values between the two nations.
Christopher Landau, the US Deputy Secretary of State, conveyed greetings and respect from President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio during a traditional welcome ceremony at the Grand Pacific Hotel. He expressed gratitude for the warm reception and hospitality extended to him.
Following the ceremony, Landau engaged in a meeting with Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka and senior government officials, where he reiterated the United States’ commitment to Fiji and the broader Pacific region. He highlighted Fiji’s importance, noting its leadership role in regional security and its significant contributions to the international community.
Landau emphasized the common values shared between Fiji and the United States, including faith, the right to choose leaders, and the freedom to communicate openly. He declared the US as a proud partner of Fiji moving forward.
Prime Minister Rabuka acknowledged Landau’s push for a Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) compact, which aims to deliver substantial benefits to both countries. This engagement is seen as a major advancement in Fiji-US relations, with potential solutions for pressing challenges and developmental priorities.
Rabuka stated Fiji’s dedication to the bilateral relationship and its focus on enhancing trade, economic cooperation, and initiatives designed to improve the wellbeing of families in both nations.
