The Fiji Cancer Society has raised alarms over a troubling increase in late-stage cancer diagnoses, with 200 new cases reported in just the past nine months. Chief Executive Belinda Chan has revealed that a staggering 60 percent of these cases were identified late, which is placing significant strain on an already challenged healthcare system.
Recent statistics indicate a variety of cancers affecting Fijians this year, including 61 cases of breast cancer, 25 cases of cervical cancer, 24 cases of endometrial cancer, 8 prostate cancers, and 6 ovarian cancers. Chan pointed out the urgent need for citizens to recognize the economic consequences that can arise from postponing medical care. Many patients delay seeking help or turn to alternative treatments until their health declines, often due to denial and misplaced perceptions of medical capabilities related to late diagnoses.
In light of the alarming rise in late diagnoses, Assistant Health Minister Penioni Ravunawa has called on the community to make regular health screenings and prompt medical consultations a priority. He emphasized that any unusual changes in one’s body should trigger immediate medical evaluation.
The data reflects a concerning trend: last year, there were 373 new cancer cases reported, down from 470 in 2022. However, health officials maintain that education and community awareness are paramount in addressing this escalating public health concern. Authorities stress the significance of early detection and proactive interventions, noting that increased health education can lead to markedly improved outcomes for those affected by cancer.
