Fiji has called on global parliaments to accelerate climate adaptation efforts, stressing that even slight temperature rises pose significant threats to vulnerable island communities. This urgent appeal was made by Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu during a parliamentary forum at COP30 in Belém, Brazil, where he emphasized the importance of upholding the 1.5°C temperature target as essential for the survival of Pacific nations.
Seruiratu noted that each increase in temperature diminishes opportunities for adaptation and amplifies the pressure on communities already grappling with climate-related challenges. He cited Fiji’s National Climate Change Act as a vital tool for integrating climate resilience into planning, budgeting, and investment strategies.
To combat the adversities presented by climate change, Seruiratu proposed three crucial priorities for parliaments globally: positioning resilience at the heart of national planning, ensuring that coastal communities and vulnerable groups have fair access to adaptation funding, and enhancing oversight to ensure that resources effectively reach those most in need.
